From the "hot bed" of bluegrass music that had developed around Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. in the late 1950s, there emerged one band that would have more impact on the expanding appeal of bluegrass music than any other - The Country Gentlemen. Bringing a new energy and approach to a music that was being overshadowed by the growing popularity of rock and roll, The Country Gentlemen reached beyond traditional bluegrass standards, performing works of new songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Ian Tyson and British rockers Manfred Mann. They introduced bluegrass audiences to songs such as "Bringing Mary Home," "Legend of the Rebel Soldier," and "Fox on the Run," to name only a few. Humorous antics added spice and interest to their live performances, and the superb musicianship of the band members inspired thousands of young musicians.
Come join us in the Virginia Historical Society's Robins Family Forum, 428 North Boulevard, Richmond, on the evening of Thursday, March 20, 2008 when JAMinc. and the Virginia Historical Society will present The Country Gentlemen Reunion Band, with Scottsville, Virginia native Eddie Adcock, Tom Gray, Jimmy Gaudreau, and Randy Waller, along with band historian Martha Adcock, as we explore through story and song the evolution of The Country Gentlemen and the band's influence on bluegrass music over the past 50 years.

So you've never heard of Dirk Hamilton? Me either, until Robbin Thompson brought up his name. Now, after hearing his CD and reading his bio, I am eager to see him perform.
Check out the lyrics in these samples:
Tell Me What It Is (that keeps us tryin') — mp3
The Relative Health of Your Soul Inside — mp3
"… one of the few legitimate poets on the scene."
-New York Press
"One of the most brilliant lyricists and musicians as well as one of the most shamefully overlookled."
--San Antonio Light
"Lucid, intelligent and distinctive songs, with a throaty howl that resembles Van Morrison and John Hiatt; he's also an emotive, evocative singer as well as a winning presence onstage."
--Austin Chronicle
"Untamed and thoroughly unpredictable energy that makes both his live shows and his records gleam with special delight."
--Bam Magazine
"…a gripping live performer."
--L. A. Times
Dirk Hamilton's extensive music career began in the early 1970s in and around Stockton, CA. Encouraged by his local popularity, he soon ventured to Los Angeles, and quickly caught the attention of influential producer Gary Katz--at the time working with Steely Dan. Katz arranged a deal with ABC Records and produced Dirk's first album, You Can Sing on the Left or Bark on the Right using elite session musicians that included Elliott Randall, Jeff Porcaro, Victor Feldman, and Larry Carlton. Katz wanted to continue producing Dirk and Steely Dan almost exclusively, but after co-producing his second album, Dirk had his own vision about the way he wanted to make his music. He put together his own band, left ABC for Elektra/Asylum, and made 1978's Meet Me at the Crux, which was called hilarious and chilling by Ken Tucker in the Rolling Stone Record Guide. Years later (1990), respected music journalist Steve Pond named it as one of the essential albums of the 1970s in an article also published in Rolling Stone. Dirk toured with Warren Zevon and produced one other album for Elektra, but his adamant stance on making music for those who wanted to hear it--not for the money it would make, ended his affiliation with the company. After leaving the business for a number of years, Dirk realized that his life was one of making music, and he embarked on a career of his own design that continues to this day. In the late-1980s he was surprised to discover that he had a large following in Italy. These loyal fans became friends, and Dirk released several albums on Italian labels. Dirk has been called "A true American master" by well-known producer Dusty Wakeman (who produced his 1996 album Sufferupachuckle), and he has been compared over the years to Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen. Music reviewers have also been quoted as saying that Dirk's music is one of the few legitimate poets on the scene (Los Angeles Times), and lucid, intelligent, and distinctive (New York Press). Dirk Hamilton is all that and more, and he continues to hold true to his stance that his career be conducted without compromise.

Pete Anderson Sextet
In Your Ear Music and Recording |
|
 |
Pete [trombone], Taylor Barnett [trumpet], Daniel Clarke [piano], Curtis Fye -[bass], Kevin Simpson [sax] and Robby Sinclair [drums]. The Jazz Sextet is a hard hitting, New York Jazz Club style band, playing the music made famous in the late 1950's and early 1960's called Hard Bop. This six - piece group has a repertoire that specializes in the music of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. |
Pete Anderson is probably the most in-demand jazz trombonist in Central Virginia. He has been a musician for twenty-five years, having played professionally for the last fifteen. These many years of experience have left him with numerous influences and the knowledge of many diverse styles of music. It has been, however, the music of Duke Ellington that has had the greatest impact on Mr. Anderson's personal musical styling. He has had the good fortune of being able to study with Art Baron, one of Ellington's great trombonists and a plunger-mute specialist. Mr. Anderson holds a Bachelors Degree in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and a Masters Degree in Music Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University. At VCU he had the opportunity to study with Doug Richards. Mr. Richards is a nationally recognized jazz educator, arranger, transcriber, director and is considerably well versed in the music of Duke Ellington. Aside from continuing a successful fourteen - year career as a mathematics instructor in Prince William and Henrico counties, he has recently engaged his efforts as a director and private instructor in the VCU jazz studies program. Mr. Anderson has been featured as the solo trombonist in numerous Richmond based performing groups including the Skip Gailes Sextet, Thomas Wakefield's Roundhouse, and The Devil's Workshop Big Band. Currently he leads swing based jazz groups of varied sizes: duet, trio, quartet, quintet, and a 10 - piece swing ensemble called The Swiss Swank Account.
Attendees are encouraged to bring food and drink to share before the concert and during the set break (2 sets). The doors will open at 6 PM with music at 7:30. JAMinc will provide soft drinks, water, ice, flatware, cups, etc.
A special welcome is extended to all jazz fans to come to the Pete Anderson Sextet performance...recorded live in Studio A.

Top student Chrissy Ammons attends Rick Epping show in April.
|
World class, virtuoso harmonica
player Rick Epping performed a "studio concert" at In Your Ear Studio on Tuesday, April 12, 2005. Rick
will soon be moving from Ashland, VA back to his native Ireland where
he won the All-Ireland Harmonica Championship in 1975. We were
fortunate to catch him for JAMinc's third studio concert shortly before
he leaves. Rick, a master musician, plays a mixture of Irish, Old Time,
Scottish, Blues and International tunes, on harmonica often with
concertina, mandolin, jaw harp and voice. A long time employee of
Hohner Harmonica Company, Rick has traveled the world as their
representative. In 2004 Hohner released a revolutionary new harmonica,
the XB-40, for which Rick holds three patents. |
